![]() ![]() It can keep one grounded so that the critics and appraisals, good or bad, don't go to one's head, as well as protect oneself from the vulnerability of opening up in front of an often unkind audience. Being an artist thrust into the spotlight must be pretty traumatic at times, and an alter ego could act as a sort of buffer to distance oneself and one's private life from the prying eyes of the public and the tabloids. The whole thing feels like stepping inside someone's subconscious for an hour with all the good, bad, love, lust, fear, insecurity that entails. There's Georgie Fruit, the black, transexual alter ego of Kevin Barnes from of Montreal. So this leads me to the question(s): What are your favourite alter egos in music? Are there similar techniques that you enjoy and feel improves the listening experience or story behind an album/artist? While he perhaps doesn't commit to the character in the narrative way that DOOM does, it still marks a new stage in his career and makes for a nice theme to bring to a live show. A modern mainstream example that comes to mind is Kendrick Lamar assuming the role of Kung Fu Kenny for DAMN. However, (imo) it remains a very interesting ways for an artist to explore different perspectives and encourages the listener to exercise their imagination while challenging what they may be accustomed to from an artist. Obviously taking on these alter egos isn't anything new with perhaps the most famous example being Ziggy Stardust. Cover band, Alter Ego, playing at the Montreal Canada Day 2012 celebrations. What I found particularly interesting was the way he really committed to the existence and personalities that these characters have (which also resulted in a slightly weird interview style as he is being interviewed as DOOM rather than Daniel Dumile) I recently watched MF DOOM's Red Bull Music Academy lecture and he spoke about his personas in music and the various characters he brings out for his record (around the 14:30 mark). Alter Ego is a non-stop, all-dance repertoire featuring the best of 70s disco, 80s rock, 90s Pop, and Top 40 of today. ![]()
